Another good tip is to try to work the ground on the same diagonal all the time, as switching back and forth leaves visible changes in the tension on the threads.

Clay is quite right, but what the books don't seem to mention, is that it is absolutely vital that the same bobbin remains the worker in the point ground. If you think a pair may have crossed and you might have 2 or 4 twists, then untwist them and check. You'd be surprised how it will show if the worker suddenly becomes a passive.

On the other hand, if you do CTT instead of CTTT, the ground works just as well, but gives a different effect altogether as there is no one worker.
