No, Susan.  Herringbone stitch is used in both sewing and  embroidery.  It 
can be utilitarian or decorative.  The zig zag  reference is about the 
pattern of attaching lace edging to a square of  fabric so it will look 
completely covered by lace.  Instead of being  attached in short straight rows, 
the 
lace is attached in a continuous  trip, moving from side-to-side on gradual 
diagonals - as in zig zag.
