Tardis stands for Time and Relative Dimension in Space. From the outside it looks like an old fashioned British Police Box - a shelter in which foot patrol police officer could shelter and from which members of the public could phone the police directly, long before the advent of the mobile phone. The Tardis is used by Dr Who (just known as The Doctor), a famous science fiction programme on TV which started in 1963 and is still going strong today, aimed just about anyone aged from 5 to 500. The Tardis used for travelling through time and space, and it's very much bigger on the inside than on the outside.
If you want to refer to somewhere in which you can fit more than you think you could, we often say it's like the Tardis. Think you'd have trouble finding anone in the UK who doesn't know who the Doctor is and what the Tardis is. All the information is on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TARDIS including photos. I find the programme quite scary, but them I'm a wimp. A lot of the Doctor's adversaries would make good subjects for lace.
