I have done the very same thing, Susan, when I was working on my small travel pillow which has a roller! Grrrrrrrr (that is the polite version!! :) ) Slackening off the threads from the bobbins - and pinning the bobbins up so the threads were Very loose, and then, starting at the gathers, and moving them back towards the bobbins, was the only way I could - more of less - smooth that footside braid. I, too, would love to know a better way - or preferably, - how Not to have that happen again!!!!!!
