Kathleen, We are very lucky to have an Idrija lace teacher in Pennsylvania. I believe Allie is teaching at the IOLI convention next month & she is scheduled to teach in Ithaca, NY in October. Allie Marguccio has studied in Slovenia & her husband makes the pillows, stands & bobbins. I made my own pillow using a foam pool noodle as the core & Mr. Marguccio graciously made a box/stand to fit. Idrija is a palms up technique so do plan for a learning curve. Allie offers a class to learn how to use the bolster pillow & practice basic techniques--highly recommended! Once you get going, I do think it is much quicker to work trails palms up. I've really enjoyed my classes with Allie & hope you can register for one because she is super patient & helpful. Speaking about the bolster pillow--an authentic one is shorter, fatter & heavier than I expected. The pillow is moved about in the stand, leaning at an angle that best suits the work. My home made pillow was made for other p! urposes in addition to Idrija so it is not as comfortable as using an authentic Slovenian bolster, however, that is OK until I see how much Idrija lace I will make. Allie is also a good source for threads specific to the lace. Hope this is helpful as you decide your next steps. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Palm Beach Gardens, FL USA
