George showed his gratitude by giving him the lucrative post of warden of the Cinque ports. During the spring he made visits of inspection to Chatham and Portsmouth; on 28 September he made a tour for the purpose of holding reviews at Winchester, Salisbury, and Warley in Essex, and on 22 November reviewed the troops encamped on Coxheath, near Maidstone. This visit is the one which I believe to have been recorded on a Downton Bobbin. The owner told me a great story about it many years ago.
