Someone gave me a bag of the beads they use to stuff dolls to use in a pincushion. I found they worked very well. I've had the same pincushion in use for over 10 years, it has never altered shape, holds the pins well, no sign of corrosion in some brass pins that have been in there for ages (I now use stainless steel). And is quite weighty, so it sits on my pillow without bouncing off.
