To the points made by Ann, Devon, Nancy, Lorraine & Robin--what can be done to dispel the notion that lace ONLY refers to something pictured in a Holbein painting, or was made by an elderly aunt & smells faintly of dried rose petals? Just pronouncing the word LACE seems to cause brain de-activation & glazed eyeballs! "Off-loom weaving" generates a quizzical look. Recently, a friend & I attended "Bijoux", a jewelry show & sale at the Norton Gallery. There were artists from all over the world, one even made bracelets using death head button weaving techniques--in wire. (Something for you to consider Nancy!) While there were the usual jewelry suspects in gold & silver, the variety of materials was truly astounding: brass, papier mache, holographic films, plastics, ceramics etc. Yet--not one lace jewelry artist. Lenka, Lauran & others could easily have blown away the Very Large Crowd! We came home with lots of ideas & inspiration. To Arlene's recent point about lace s! hoes, how about lace spats? Before you conjure the Monopoly guy's feet, visit www.bodyfurnitures.com & check out the "shoe jewellery" section. Yes, I tried on #4! Exquisite but beyond my current budget. When I finish working my lace exhibit samples, this looks like a do-able project & one I would wear in a heartbeat, especially if it's embellished with lace! Is this a case of Gil Dye's shoe roses meeting lace spats? Hope so. Sincerely, Susan Hottle USA.
