The IOLI started as a small sub-group of the National Federation of Doll Clubs. A few people were interested in dressing dolls in historically correct lace. Also there seemed to be some evolving interest in dressing in old lace by the members. My understanding is that as lacemaking became more common in the US during the 1970s, lacemakers joined the group and by their greater number, changed the focus from studying lace to making it. In 1973 they voted to become independent of the National Federation of Doll Clubs and hold their own conventions. It is a very interesting subject for study. I was a member of the Metro Chapter of the IOLI in the early 1970s. It existed largely because there was a very active teacher in the area. I suspect that it was the same in other areas, with the teacher being a focal point for the development of the club. Devon
