Can I say what a pleasure it was to read the response from Brian, our bobbin maker/expert in residence. It’s good to know he’s keeping in touch during his recovery.
Another beautiful wood Yew seems to be a more modern choice, I cannot recall finding any, or very few, old bobbins made from it. Maybe our predecessors were more superstitious as the tree is usually associated with graveyards. When a lilac tree was uprooted in my garden David Davies kindly produced some lovely bobbins for me - now that is a beautiful wood and I believe a joy to turn, it has an almost pink/purple hue as perhaps you would expect from the colour of the trees flowers. Maybe not every cottager had a lilac tree in the garden with fruit trees taking preference. Diana in Northamptonshire where snowdrops, aconites, crocus, hellebores and daffodils are all in bloom. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here.
