Thanks for all of the M comments...I think I know how to do all of the M1's 
from the 50's to current and have watched them evolve.  I also agree that Vogue 
Knitting is wonderful, but haven't heard it directly compared to Principles of 
Knitting, which I don't have, but some have said once they got it, it wasn't 
all they had heard about.  Kind of like someone raving about a movie, and you 
get your appetite so high that the movie doesn't quite make the high mark.

I think that my question more relates to older patterns from the last half of 
the 1800's to say 1950 roughly.  There were rarely pics and M becomes more 
confusing during that blur of the shifts for knitting and lace knitting 
terms...swatching becomes a must I guess, but hints on the front side saves 
endless hours of ferreting out answers.

I guess the answer is to give up knitting all previous and design new!  LOL
