When lacing 'away from one's regular site' take/keep a moist wash cloth in a zip lock baggie. You can 'wash and refresh' your hands at will with no trouble. I learned this trick from LPS's own Monica Hahn (of Tatted Angels fame), she always carried one with her to LPS meetings.
