The latest edition of EMBROIDERY, published by the UK Embroiderers' Guild , has an interesting article on costume designer Andrea Galen. Her work for film and television runs from Withnail and I to the recent Jane Eyre and Persuasion.
After the S.E.Asian Tsunami in 2004, she helped a group of Sri Lankan lacemakers to set up The Power of Hands - a cooperative through which they could sell their work. She commissions lace from them for period costumes, and also for fashion items, and has persuaded other designers to do the same (though it is worrying to learn that the designer for Elizabeth: the Golden Age has ordered "lace and tatting") The Sri Lankan lacemakers website is at www.powerofhands.org Andrea's is www.andreagalen.couk There's an exhibition of costumes from Persuasion at the Jane Austen Centre in Bath, if you happen to be in the area: www.janeausten.co.uk Bridget, in Watford, England. - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
