Ruth,

I was taught lacemaking by a lady who learned from a continental teacher, - and so taught me to make a single knot at the bottom of leaf tallies using the outer passives. It was many years (about 15!) before I discovered that others do not tie a knot at the bottom of them! Purists have a fit of the horrors, but it does not show, and the tally stays in shape! Useful if you are working a daisy, and have 4 tallies all coming into the centre. You can make them and toss them aside - literally - out of the way, till you get the others made - and they never come undone!!

The small blue Rutgers book on Cluny Lace shows making a knot at the bottom of a square tally. - using the worker pair, I think, but I sometimes tie a knot with the passive pr (not the worker pr), just to keep it square. ALways use the passive pr to make the next stitch or 2, never the worker pr (the pr with the worker in it.). Work as much as you can with the passive pair first. This will help keep the tally square.

Always try to cross the centre passive to the other side (the Gate method) as this also helps to get a better square tally, and always try to cross the passive over (either right to left, or left to right) the same way in all the tallies in that piece of lace. The light catches it in the same way, then, and makes your work look more even. The exception to this rule is the Devon Diamond Ground, but that is another story!!!!!!!
