Hi Beth et al,
Just to pick up on one of the poiints, re judges' opinions etc.
I long ago entered a piece of embroidery in a WI craft competition, along
with several others. Mine received an 'Hon. Mention' but the one which
should have won was disqualified, because in the opinion of the Judge, it
was 'made from a craft kit.' The lady who had made it was quite irate, as
she had actually designed the kit which was later sold, and that was the
prototype, which she had made and refined. Of course, it was too late to
change the judging, but I - and the others in the competition - did hope
that the judge wasn't too quick to leap to conclusions in future.

Subject: [lace] Hand or machine
I have a BIG problem with inconsistency, especially within one or some of
individual judges' own standards. Do judges of hand-embroidered items
mark the piece down if it has machine-made lace on it? How about machine
lace applied by hand, and machine lace applied by machine?
Some competitions allow a great deal of leeway to the judges, who too
often allow unquestioned assumptions to support their judgement. There is
frequently no way for an entrant to know what those assumptions are before
entering!
