Dear All,

My copy arrived yesterday, and it's lovely.
Mouthwatering for Beds
fan. Big too, and that's not just because of the
multilingual text.

The first section has the basic instructions
(tetra-lingual) for Floral
Beds- those familiar with Barbara Underwood's books
will recognise
petalled flowers, two part leaves etc. There is a
section on the elaborate
grounds of Lester lace. Then on to the 40 patterns.
Most are floral
motifs in roundels and other shapes, mostly with
fancy grounds, all about
palm sized, 2-3 inches. They are laid out on two
pages with a colour
photo and the pricking on one, and a information page
on the other with
bullet points of the key techniques used (again
tetra-lingual) eg
starting on a curve, petalled flower, ground, gimped
veins ... referring
back to the techniques section. Some close up
photos are included for
certain pieces. The pieces are all shown mounted -
for example on a
clutch purse or hairbrush back, sometimes the thread
colours have been
chosen to blend with the backing - this can make the
lace harder to
study. But the photography is excellent.

There are a couple of more elaborate edgings
culminating in the cover
pattern. My impression is that various patterns
contain elements of this
big pattern, for example the bindweed flower, so one
can try them out
and build up skills to the big pieces. The patterns
are well designed
and flow, and are beautiful in their own right.

They look well designed, but are not for the beginner,
after the
instruction pages there are no working diagrams! But
if you have worked
through Barbara's Beds in 20 lessons book - most
techniques are there. One
new pricking style (to me) is for the multipart
flowers such as the
peony or Honiton rose, is the pricking is given with
1 line of pins, but
should be worked with two closely spaced rows. I
puzzled over this last
night - at the fine scale of the pricking (80/2 and
100/2 thread for
the most part), I'm not sure I know how to do this.
Of course I want to
 do the peony first.

This really is a wonderful addition to the floral Beds
literature, it
just added another how many to my 'must do' list,

Louise

foggy Cambridge
