I'd have to agree with the estimates for the US. I think we have (at last count) close to 30 odd members in our group and only a few of us are members of IOLI.
Not to mention all those that tat or do knitted lace (or other laces such as embroidered ones like Hardanger or crocheted laces) that aren't part of major 'lace' groups, but maybe part of a smaller group, or embroiderer's guild or lacy knitters guild or some such, or not a member of any group at all. There are lots of knitted lace and crocheted entries at the state fair and tatting too, and almost all of those entries are from people who aren't affiliated with our group. Of course there are also a number listed in the IOLI handbook as members that aren't part of local groups, such as ours. It goes both ways. My guess it's a very difficult question to put a figure to. Interesting question though. Wonder how many Lacemakers there are in some of the countries that have smaller or quieter representation on Arachne, such as Malta or some of the European countries/regions?
