I too was told by my teachers to leave the pins in a completed piece of
work so that it could 'set', and this message I pass on to my own
students. I believe it does produce a crisper finished result. However,
when in Bruges earlier this year, we asked the same question of
Marie-Anne Claeys our Belgian teacher and she had never heard of this
before, and dismissed it as quite pointless! She concluded it must be an
'English' thing.
