Hello all- >From what I can tell by looking at the pictures, the holes in the top piece and the base remind me of an antique combination pin cushion/thread holder I have. Spools are held in place on thin metal rods that are fitted through the holes in the top that extend to the base. You can reel off thread from the spools. Pat's object has many more holes around the circumference, but that might mean that you have more options for placing the rods depending on the width of the spools.
It just occurs to me that I can take a photo of mine and send it to you, Malvary--not sure I can post to Webshots.
