I teach a class in Religious Studies at the University of Ottawa that
deals (in part) with the mind/body connection and healing. The human body
is a marvelous organism which seeks homeostatis (well being / balance /
effortlessness / stability). A kind word, a smile, a warm cup of tea,
faith (in almost anything and anyone), a belief, can all support the
immune system and the body's natural healing processes. We usually call it
the placebo effect and discount it. But we shouldn't. Its one of the most
powerful processes in the body. So if for a while a belief in pewter
bobbins alleaviating arthritis helped lacemakers to make lace longer ...
hurrah!

On the other hand, if it doesn't work for you, don't bother using it, no
matter who tells you it will work.
