Dear Margot
I have just returned from Lewes, the county town of East Sussex just 20
minutes drive away from here, and found your exhibition of painted
lace. It was lovely! the draftsmanship of the artist is quite superb
as she paints lace with fine pen and ink, white on a coloured
background. She has really done her research by visiting museums for
her samples, which she then photographs and uses for the paintings.
Some of it put me in mind of Vinciolo's designs for lace of the
venetian period. Most of it on the wall looked like the real thing in
particular a Honiton dress front and a large tape collar, but much of it
was sample style, with torn edges. I think the one I liked the best was
of a white cutwork bonnet which had been opened up and flattened to show
all the stitchery.
I asked permission to take some photos though I am not the best of
photographers. I was told that someone else had been in yesterday
'taking photos for a lady in Canada' so you may have some better ones on
the way already. (Who was that I wonder?) I'll sort out my best ones
and send them later to you.
Best wishes Rosemary in Sussex
