also try using a scanner either with the lid open or closed (open casues a
black background (due to low depth of field) and works wonders with light
coloured laces)

I have always had the best results using a tip given to me by Gary Peach many years ago now. That is - the further open you have the lid of the scanner, the blacker the background. So I use two old cassette tapes to keep the lid about 1cm (half and inch) off the lace. That gives a beautiful warm grey shade of background.

Then, if for some reason the lace won't stay flat enough on its own, I will find a book with that similar grey tone on its back cover and put that on the lace. Then scan.
