I would suspect, too, Brian, that bobbins are also longer today than in the past, but maybe you might have a more scholarly more idea about that.
I have some antiques, and a couple of them are quite a bit shorter than the 'average Joe' bobbins of today - but one that I'm thinking of is also rather 'annorexic' :-) I'd be happy to furnish a photo and some dimensions in the new year if you'd like.
