I asked for a jewelers loupe many years ago for either Christmas or birthday, and was given a very nice one that lives in my lace bag now (but it used to live in my handbag). I'm not sure what magnification it is, but I love that it's small and portable, and has a nice little leather case, and gives me excellent magnification when I need it - either for studying lace or when judging.
Re: head lamps - bicyclist use them a lot too, so other places to look are REI, Sierra Trading Post (online) Campmor (online), probably Wal-Mart, and other bike/outdoor stores like Performance Bikes and Cabela's. No relation to any but satisfied customer. Good luck.
