These two threads may cross... I remember hearing that sol/Teneriffe crossed the Atlantic to South America by ship, the makers being ships' sailmakers and tailors keeping themselves profitably busy. Working on canvas stretched on frames would be practical on a ship, and of course the materials would be to hand. Alex, is there anything in this?
