I have these 2 books that Helen mentioned, & think they are both invaluable. The Grimwood is great for starting off as a beginner & Catherine's book is more intermediate. You'd be mad not to get them both, I refer to them often. I also use Therese de Dilmont's Encyclopedia of Needlework as a stitch reference. You can download it as a pdf from few places, including the Arizona website. Enjoy!!
