In response to all the bad news about copyright problems I would like to mention a positive product of copying: any UK author who registers with the Authors Licensing and Collecting Society receives an annual payment in recognition of legal copying that takes place in libraries, schools, universities and organisations such as the Lace Guild. I have no idea how this payment is calculated, but it is a pleasing sum that comes in each February (much more than the return from PLR - Public Lending Rights). I think other countries may have similar schemes. For more information go to http://www.alcs.co.uk Gil >From a chilly Northumberland
