My personal opinions on this: I'm not sure what the difference is between:

"@evan sure, i'll ask !tommie to fix it"

and the currently used:

"@evan sure, i'll ask @tommie to fix it"

In both cases, surely it should be treated as a reply to both @tommie
and @evan. Also seen frequently is "@person1 @person2 some message
directed at both of them". I'm not sure what benefit is derived from
making people use @ at the start of a message and ! elsewhere, other
than adding the distinction of "I'm talking about you, not to you" ;)

Not seeing @replies, I see that differently. Someone I'm following says
"@jrandomhacker Oh, that's interesting", I might want to go and find out
what it was and find someone interesting to follow in the process. If it
wasn't interesting, maybe the person who said it should have used
a not-yet-implemented direct message. Makes sense as an option though.

@321321 sounds useful but isn't 321321 a valid, if silly, nickname?
Perhaps that merits a different character.

Cheers,

Ciaran
