As far as I'm aware, the version Identica is running is the one in the 'mainline' repository on Gitorious.
Regarding the search problem, you haven't been very specific but I would guess that the problem you are seeing is this: http://laconi.ca/trac/ticket/776 (also http://laconi.ca/trac/ticket/1232) You could check if the proposed fix resolves the same problems you are experiencing by changing the collation on the relevant tables as described in those two issues.
