You're welcome Eric. Glad someone found that post useful.
I've actually posted another blog that might be more useful for anyone
interested in the plugin system. The post is about a simple plugin I
wrote called the plugin developer helper (PDhelper). It places markers
at each hook output point and provides some information about the
'action' object of each page.
PDhelper would also be useful for those looking to add widgets or ads to
their Laconica instance.
The blog post is here:

You can see the plugin running here: http://laconica.kylehasegawa.com

Kyle

Just want to say thanks to Kyle, your blog post was the "ah ha!"
moment for me realizing how plugins work in laconica and how I can use
them. I've already started pulling my changes out of the core :)
Thanks!

Kirk,
The code for the tabs are in the following files however, I'd
recommend against modifying core code unless you are willing to
maintain local diffs to patch the core each time you update Laconica.:
lib/groupnav.php
lib/logingroupnav.php
lib/personalgroupnav.php
lib/publicgroupnav.php
lib/searchgroupnav.php
lib/subgroupnav.php
I'd recommend using the plugin system since plugins are less
likely to be affected by core changes. I just happened to have
written such a plugin for the TWiT Army Canteen
(http://army.twit.tv) to modify the core output, including the
tabs section. You can view the source code here:
