I started from http://laconi.ca/ which quickly and easily lead me to read http://laconi.ca/trac/wiki/HackingGuide. But I had failed to read this email post, which, although linked from that page, is described as "see xxx for original", when in fact it does contain essential branch info that's (clearly) missing when you start.
