Why not use a local copy of the PECL class (provided it's good enough of course)?
In SPIP (www.spip.net) we have developped a http function (back when CURL didn't exist) and we are now thinkking of switching to CURL or something else -- that would be more robust and tested and all. If you want to write a specific library why not make it independent from the laconica project?
