Would it be possible to create a twitter like application that only shows the first 140 characters of a message. That way people can still get bite sized information, but if they would like to read more of what their friends are talking about, they can click on a simple "More" link to see it. You could even organize the information like forums, nesting responses and allowing new threads to be made off any response.
