Hi Roland, 
This is quite true. Adding this extension effectively solves the problem
with PHP version 5.3.15. I suggest to add this information in the
documentation Lam. 
For information too, this extension is not available at the moment on
openSUSE 13.1 which embeds a version of PHP 5.4.2.
