Peter, it seems to me if I recall correctly that I set the nose gear
cylinder by setting the aft end first. In other words I retracted
the cylinder with the rod end halfway on the threads and then set its
position onto the brackets with the nose gear retracted. I also had
a small piece of dense rubber on the weldment to cushion any over
retraction. By having the rod end in the middle you can fine tune
the retract position when everything is set up. I did not use the
upstop sleeve on the nose gear. I wouldn't have used it on the main
gear if I had known ahead of time. As I remember when set up this
way; the brackets ended up right in the middle of the phenolic
blocks. When the hydraulic cylinder extends it will be pushing on
the knee joint which is very strong. At least it worked for me...
