David Jones has some real good points here, and as a closet libertarian I
have to agree with most of them. However, ignoring the rules -- which are
always available to hang us if the government wants to, no matter what we've
actually done (remember Bob Hoover?) -- may not be the best approach.
My self-protection scheme is as follows. Join AOPA and EAA and have them
fight the political fight for you. Fork over the extra $20 or so and join
the AOPA legal protection plan, whereby their lawyers fight for you against
the FAA. (Does it really work that way? Have any of you ever had an
opportunity to use this service?) Finally, always carry a NASA "Get out of
jail free" card in your flight bag -- the ASRS Aviation Safety Reporting
System.
Then go do what David suggests -- Go fly!
