Thanks GtkApplicationPrivate is just a typed pointer used to pad the instance structure; what it points to is irrelevant, since it's data private to the GtkApplication type. You need to take it into account when sizing the instance structure (something you can also do by using g_type_query() and getting the instance size), but you should not have access to its contents — that being the whole point of having the private data in the first place.
