IMO, you can change anything so long as it is accompanied by the right
version number update.  So, if you ever need to change one of those
"certain things [that] will never ever change" you should go to 2.0.0
(or however you number your alpha versions.)  But then I've long
preferred the old style of version numbering to the blecherous scheme
used by Linux...  :^)
