If it's the suggestions that are slow (not 100% sure), then
perhaps there could be an option to do spelling checking
without giving suggestions. Personally, I care more about
finding the typos than having suggestions. On the other
hand, "yet another option" is added complexity.

Giving suggestions can in theory be done lazily in a GUI.
But with the command line at least, lazy suggestions
don't make much sense.
