Quaker is correct; nwam doesn't currently distinguish between
wep and wpa keys, so it simply attempts to use the existing
key.  There's also not a way to delete the existing key via
the nwam interface; so unfortunately, the workaround you found
is exactly the way it has to work right now.  This is something
we plan to improve with the phase 1 delivery.
