The live CD was probably using the vesa X driver and it might not like the 1280x800 mode. The VAIO SZ has two video chipsets selected by the "Stamina/Speed" switch, an i945 (GMA 950) and a GeForce 7400. I just upgraded to SXCE b70 and did not have to modify the included video drivers. The i945 works fine with the stock i810 Xorg and i915 DRM drivers except the external monitor seems to only clone the laptop display (will try again later when RandR 1.2 is supported). AIGLX works for Compiz/Beryl. There used to be a problem with DRI but that has been fixed since b68. The NVIDIA chipset has worked great with the included drivers since snv_53 or so, hotplugging displays and everything works. The SXCE graphical installer probably uses the "nv" driver when the NVIDIA chip is selected, the output is 8-bit colour (but with the correct resolution). Don't worry about that. -Albert
