that sounds very odd indeed... how is your xorg set up? the touchpad
not working may just be a configuration issue.

that does seem to point toward the xorg config.

can you please send me the following file off-list:

/var/log/Xorg.0.log

as well as 

/etc/X11/xorg.conf (if it exists)

and output of (as root)

# prtconf -v

Please send them to me directly, they are far too large to be posted to
the list!
