I agree with you that the legal eagles should look over the ramifications for 
Sun. And "clean room" is not a legal requirement, even in the US.

That said, several cases of reverse engineering have been won in the courts 
simply under the heading of "interoperability".  Isn't preventing Solaris from 
running on a particular machine and interoperate over the built-in wireless 
enough to allow reverse-engineering?
