i booted the machine with the latest Knoppix CD-- i know the wifi tools better under linux-- and it looks like the card is mute under linux (kernel 2.6.17) too.
i purchased a netgear WG511T at bestbuy today-- it also uses the atheros driver-- and put it in the machine along with the CM9 for a back to back test. the 511T was picking up 3 wifi nets and the CM9 was reporting ZERO! so i guess we can safely say its not a solaris bug! so i've contacted yellowbloc and they were very nice and helpful-- they said i could send the CM9 back for a new one. in case any one is wondering, this is the lead free version of the CM9. maybe the leaded version is a bit more hardy, because i'm extremely careful with this beautiful laptop and i can't figure out what would have caused it to fail.
