OK, I figured this one out... It's due to boot/solaris/bootenv.rc hardcoding the bootpath to the now defunct link.
The other files that needed some change are: /etc/path-to-inst (with the new device path) /dev/dsk and /dev/rdsk links (just to ensure device consistency with /etc/vfstab).
