*Maybe*. We have some stuff in place for AC'97 which will be more
powerful, however it remains to be seen how we will expose some of these
more gory details... and of course, there are problems because of
different choices taken by hardware mfgs.
Its unlikely that simplistic "master volume" control will also control
the beep. If you want to disable the beep, I recommend using xset or
other appropriate utilities to disable the OS from generating the system
beep in the first place. (I use visual flash in some environments --
e.g. emacs.)
