You might be thinking of the first generation MacBook Pro from early 2006. They're using Core 2 now, which have better power management. I don't have problems with sound, but then again I don't have a first generation model, those were the ones with the issue, I owned one, but the popping was only during initialization. (driver and coldstart) Don't get a first generation, they had thermal compound discrepencies, sound popping, and ATI graphics. If you can somehow muster to afford $2400 USD for a 15.4" MacBook Pro (3,1) you'd have no issues. I've had mine since June, and it throws out no more heat than my Thinkpad T30. (Mobile PIV) There are no sound issues on mine, the LCD uses LED backlighting (More efficient, less power drawl, brighter, more environmentally sound), it has N draft enabled Atheros from the factory, comes with 160GB SATA, comes with 2GB standard, comes with NVIDIA graphics, and even has Firewire 800, which rev 1 and 2 didn't have unless you had a 17" model.
