Try using dladm instead of wificonfig.
dladm connect-wifi [-e _essid_] [-i _bssid_] [-k _key_,...] [-s wep]
[-a open|shared] [-b bss|ibss] [-c] [-m a|b|g]
[-T _time_] [_name_]
