I vaguely remember reading about Linux driver a while ago, where the author argued that flash storage does not fit into the unix block device model because of erase. I've just dug up that page: http://www.linux-mtd.infradead.org/faq/general.html I do not suppose it to be hugely relevant to your work though, since MTD also relies on erase-aware filesystems. -Artem
