I ran gconf-editor and found the key you referred to:

/schemas/system/smb/workgroup

however I was unable to modify the key:

"Currently pairs and schemas can't be edited. This will be changed in a later
version."

So I poked around a little more and found the following key that looked related:

/system/smb/workgroup

and its long description said:

"The Windows networking workgroup or domain that the user is part of. In order
for a new workgroup to fully take effect the user may need to log out and log
back in."

And this key was editable so I placed my Windows workgroup name in there,
logged out, and logged back in but with no apparent effect in the network file
browser. It still shows a globe icon that says "Windows Network" but clicking
through it doesn't do anything.

I then found the samba client at:

/usr/sfw/bin/sambaclient

and running it threw an error saying that it couldn't find smb.conf. So I found
the conf file at:

/etc/sfw/smb.conf-example

so I created smb.conf and was able to run the smbclient and list out the shares
on my home NAS drive. Now how do I associate the smbclient with the network
file browser on the desktop (if that's the right approach)?

Thanks,
Rene
